As they say on Project Runway, “one day you’re in, the next day you’re out.” While environmental efforts are far from the glitz and glam of the runway, if your company isn’t integrating a commitment to sustainability efforts into its business plan, your chances of staying competitive in a crowded marketplace are slim. NYC is leading the charge and encouraging friendly competition by instituting a city-wide benchmarking rating system to gauge the energy efficiency of large buildings. Businesses need to be transparent about everything nowadays, so why not add energy conservation efforts to that list?
The NYC Benchmarking Law (Local Law 84) requires owners of large buildings to annually measure their energy and water consumption in a process called benchmarking. Proper benchmarking is more important than ever before because starting in 2020, owners of all buildings over 25,000 square feet will be required to post their energy grades at public entrances. Grades will range from A–F and will be based on their benchmarking score.
Business owners with higher grades will see positive benefits, such as the ability to demand higher rents and receive tax breaks and incentives that come from green efforts, whereas businesses with lower grades won’t reap any financial rewards and will be marked appropriately for their lack of sustainability efforts. The report card grade is a way to hold business owners liable for their conservation efforts and let the public know about it.
The deadline for Local Law 84 Compliance is approaching! NYC buildings over 50,000 square feet have until Dec. 31, 2018 to submit 2017’s energy and water consumption data. Buildings over 25,000 square feet have until February 1, 2019 to do the same, and starting in 2019, all buildings over 25,000 square feet will need to comply by May 1 of each year.
